The remaining camera controls include the usual fare: a dedicated video record button for those intending to shoot film, a couple of order dials for adjusting exposure and focus, and so on.

LCD Screen

As was mentioned earlier, the Nikon P510 features a 3in LCD screen that Nikon P510 can tilt. With a simple turn of the knob, the screen may be pulled out and rotated through an arc of around 180 degrees. A better solution would be to have the screen turn on a pivot to one side of the camera body, allowing for full 360-degree rotation. Even though this implementation of a movable screen works, it is not particularly impressive.

Quality -Control Polish

It weighs a few ounces more than the P500 when fully loaded, but its physical dimensions are similar at 82.9mm x 119.8mm x 102.2mm (3.3 x 4.8 x 4.1 inches), with the P510 being 0.2 inches wider than its predecessor (5mm).

The P510 is smaller than a DSLR but still quite a handful, with a deep, prominent grip that makes it quite pleasant to handle and use.

A rubber backstop for your thumb is buried in this perspective, but the rear control dial is clearly visible. The P510’s direct movie shooting button is on the right, and an electronic viewfinder is centrally and above the 3 tiltable LCD screens.

Heer’s a close-up of the electronic viewfinder. The knurled wheel on the left adjusts the diopter, and the little button below it toggles between LCD and EVF live view modes. Although not as adaptable as a fully articulated display, the P510’s back LCD is highly useful for high/low angle shooting.

Both the electronic viewfinder (EVF) and the 3-inch, 921k dot, hinged LCD provide 100% coverage (the EVF on the P500 was 97%). The EVF is tiny and awkward, but it has a generous diopter correction range of -/+4. (Without my reading glasses, I typically have to set the diopter to the far end of magnification, but on the P510, I can put it to the middle.)

The LCD screen can be adjusted for overhead and low-angle images, and it is clear and helpful in all but the darkest environments. It briefly brightens in extremely low light but only long enough to rapidly prepare a shot.

The P510’s rear panel houses a combined 4-way controller/control dial, with direct control points for flash mode, self-timer, exposure correction, and macro focus mode at the cardinal points. Playback and image deletion is located in the upper left and lower right corners, respectively.

The P510’s top features a configurable Fn button, a combined zoom collar, a shutter release, and an exposure mode dial. This unlocks a plethora of choices, including an automated mode, program AE, shutter- and aperture-priority, full manual, and a custom user setting. The 42X optical zoom lens is the P510’s main selling point. This lens has a separate zoom switch on the barrel that is well-positioned for use with the left hand. Although a traditional zoom switch is located at the shutter button, this side-mounted function is more convenient for video.

A zoom/shutter combo, mode dial, programmable function (Fn) button, and on/off button atop the grip round out the control arrangement. To zoom, focus manually, and rapidly return the zoom to its previous position, a separate zoom lever is located on the lens barrel and can be handled with the left hand while supporting the camera. The top of the camera houses a pop-up flash and a GPS antenna.

A button to the left of the EVF toggles between the LCD and the viewfinder (there is no automatic changeover). The control wheel, which cycles among menus (as opposed to the thumbwheel, which changes shutter and aperture settings), has less play, making it easier to stop at a given menu item precisely.

While the P510 lacks the built-in assistance system of Sony’s HX200V, for example, the camera is quite simple to use and intuitive. When the ‘SCENE’ mode option is selected, the exposure mode dial also allows access to a trio of scene modes, as well as an extensive list of others (including scene auto selector, portrait, sports, beach, snow, night portrait, pet portrait, two panorama options, and 3D).
